Time and time again the Abu Sayyaf has shown its ability to  launch terrorist attacks almost at will. Dismissed as a spent force two years ago following the death of one its chieftains, Abu Sabaya, in Zamboanga, the Abu Sayyaf has reasserted itself as the country’s most formidable enemy. It is responsible for the country’s deadliest terrorist attack, planting a bomb on an interisland ferry that killed over 100 people in February last year.

Just last month, the Abu Sayyaf struck again, setting off bombs in Makati, General Santos and Davao cities. As many as eight died in the almost simultaneous bombings and over 100 were injured.
