Every time May 1 comes along, the labor sector in the Philippines and its advocates push for wage increases. Since the political opposition was given a voice in the country’s lawmaking bodies in the 1980s, workers in the private sector have clamored for a legislated wage increase of P125, across the board.

In fact on Friday, Rep. Lorenzo Tañada III of the Fourth District of Quezon Province and grandson of the late great nationalist Lorenzo Tañada, called on his colleagues in the House to pass such a bill.
