Philippines nearing rice self-sufficiency

Almost two decades after the Philippines started importing rice, the country has continued to make substantial progress in palay (unmilled rice) production and is closer to achieving its self-sufficiency target by end of next year.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) over the past two years has taken big strides in food staples production, particularly palay, the country’s most important food crop.
