“Some say the world will end
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.”
Fire and Ice by Robert Frost
TO keep your sanity in this country, it is imperative that you maintain your sense of humor. If you don’t but insist on worrying about your problems or our country’s problems, either any of the three things can happen to you – you will grow old fast; you will suffer a heart attack and begin your journey to the memorial park; or earn an honored place in the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) in Mandaluyong City of Ben Abalos.
But who wants to grow old? Only the stupid or the hopeless wants to grow old! Who wants to reside six feet under the ground in the memorial park? Only the terribly sick, to permanently ease their pain, or those who are burnt out and have no more desire to go on living. Unless you have the stature or accomplishments of Ernest Hemingway or Yukio Mishima, there is no sense ending your life. The world is so beautiful to leave without enjoying its beauty to the last drop. Who wants to go to the NCMH? Not even the mildly insane wants to go there, unless you want to see Napoleon Bonaparte or Dr. Jose Rizal and other dead personalities intoning their greatness.
So take life in stride. Enjoy the shenanigans of politicians without forgetting your dreams to set the world on fire and build a new world thereafter. Cultivate your sense of humor with things that elicit laughter.
My new preoccupation is to read the comments of people in Facebook. Why? I am amused by the reaction of people in Duterte’s zoo by their colossal ignorance of their baby and the national situation as well as their lack of knowledge of contemporary history and international developments. But what is worse, their absolute lack of knowledge and understanding of the English language and the story of mankind. And also, they don’t know me at all!
So, for the people who are hot against martial law and the condition of this country for so many decades, I ask these questions:
Where were they during martial law? - People like Senate President Frank Drilon, Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, President Fidel Ramos, Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Mayor Erap Estrada, Senator Bong Revilla, Senator Miriam Santiago, and Senator Jinggoy Estrada.
Were they not working under martial law and for Marcos?
Where were Senator Gregorio Honasan, then Colonel of the AFP, and Senator Antonio Trillanes, God knows what was he, during martial law?
Where were the members of the Cabinet of PNoy, the members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, Congress of the Philippines, during martial law?
Where were the governors and city mayors during that period? Now is the time for them to render an accounting to the people.
Enough is enough for bragging and a lot of hot air. As we said during the dark days of martial law – Tama na! Sobra na! Palitan na! – ang sistema. There is need to change this unjust and oppressive system! It should be changed through constitutional means by the people to establish a constitutional transition government because of the failure of the President and the military to exercise their powers under sections 1 and 3 of Article II of the Constitution.
Again, in order not to be misunderstood, this is not an advice or advocacy; this is analysis and discourse. As Mao Zedong once said, “Let a hundred flowers bloom, let a thousand schools of thought contend.”
Where do we go from here? The answer is NEVER AGAIN!
Never again - an unjust and oppressive system which makes the rich richer and the poor poorer!
Never again – a system where politicians steal and rob the people of their money!
Never again – a system where a citizen cannot secure education simply because he is born poor!
Never again – a system where a citizen dies simply because he has no money for medicines, for doctors and for hospitalization!
Never again - a judicial system where money is the operative value, not what you know but whom you know!
Never again – a judiciary where many justices, judges and prosecutors are grafters and corrupt!
Never again – a judicial system that gives justice, if at all, after the passage of many years!
Never again – Presidents of the Republic who are ignorant, incompetent and mentally deficient!
Never again – candidates for President, Vice-President, senators, congressmen, governors and mayors who are incompetent, lacking in qualifications, grafters and corrupt!
Never again – a system that neglects agriculture and industry at the expense of farmers, fishermen and entrepreneurs!
Never again – a system where the moguls of economic empires have their own banks!
Never again – public utilities that are controlled by private interests!
Never again – a government that neglects inventors, artists, writers and refuse to give them the needed help and subsidy!
Never again – a government that exploits and allows the exploitation of the laboring class!
Never again – a government that cannot solve crimes and allows the criminals to proliferate and intimidate the populace!
Never again – a government that allows mayors, governors, policemen and those in the military to kill helpless citizens at will, without these government officials and employees being prosecuted and convicted summarily!
Never again – violations of human rights by the military and the police, without prosecuting the violators!
Never again – Presidents, other public officials, men in the military and police who not know their duties under the Constitution and who violate the Constitution because of their greed, ignorance and incompetence!
Never again – an ignorant, stupid and unconcerned citizenry who are not concerned with the welfare of the country and their fellowmen!
Never again – an undisciplined citizenry that does not know the meaning of love of country!
Never again – citizens who because of their ignorance and stupidity admire killers, gangsters and criminals as their chosen leaders!
Never again – an electoral system with voters, candidates, Comelec, police, military and teachers as participants in the criminal process!
Never again – an electoral process that operates on money and cheating!
Never again – a people who are not enraged by oppression and injustice!
Never again – an educational system which extends the stay of children in schools instead of reducing elementary to 5 years, high school to 3 years, pre-law to 2 years!
Never again - a bunch of cowards who despite their penurious and unjust pitiful condition refuse to fight for their rights!
Never again – SAF officers and men as well as military officers who did not help their beleaguered SAF officers and men because of their cowardice, concern for their career and refusal to put their lives on the line and, instead obey an illegal order of a President who does not know the Philippine Constitution!
Never again – a citizenry that refuses to fight abusive officials, military men and policemen!
Never again- a mainstream media that jumps at the shout of their bosses, the oligarchs and various vested interests!
Never again – mainstream media practitioners who are blatant apostles of AC-DC, attack and collect; defend and collect!
Never again – a country that is insane and stupid but does not know how to end insanity and stupidity!
Never again – lawyers who because of their greed make the country their nest for graft and corruption; wanton violation of their professional ethics; and their obeisance to those who control the judicial process!
Never again – a military establishment lacking in material, equipment, arms and ammunition to demolish the enemies of the Republic!
Never again – military officers who do not know how to pull a coup, instead go to elective offices where their preparation is not only minimal but embarrassing!
You agree with Never Again? Organize a constitutional transition government with leaders who are brilliant, knowledgeable, educated and civilized, brave but not traveling around with a phalanx of bodyguards – not criminals whose followers claim that they are the solutions to the country’s problems. They are not solutions, they are the problems!
This is not advocacy or advice. This is only discourse and analysis.
