No OWWA help for 9 Iraq blaze victims

ONLY four of the 13 migrant workers who perished in Capitol Hotel’s massage center fire in Erbil, Kurdistan region, Iraq are entitled to benefits from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). Records show nine of the fatalities were not members of OWWA and their families could not avail the agency’s aid. Heirs of OWWA members are entitled to P200,000 in death benefits, plus P20,000 funeral assistance. The Department of Foreign Affairs has requested the Philippine Embassy in Baghdad to negotiate with employer of the nine victims for further financial assistance. Meanwhile, repatriation of two other Filipinas employed in the same establishment but off for the day when the fire happened is being processed.
