Comelec rules out extra pay for BEIs

PUBLIC school teachers who will serve as members of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) in next month’s elections cannot expect an additional pay from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) despite the expected extra hours of work they have to render as a result of the Supreme Court (SC) order on the issuance of a voter receipt.

Chairman Juan Andres Bautista said the commission has no budget for additional pay to BEIs.

“We don’t oppose it. We want a bigger budget but where shall we get the money?” Bautista added.

But election watchdog Kontra Daya convenor Danilo Arao said the teachers deserve just compensation.

“If you have to spend on something, it must be on important matters such as the increase on the salary of teachers,” Arao said, referring to the decision of the Comelec to increase the budget for the procurement of vests that will be worn by the BEIs from P20.81 million to P26.55 million.

“To some extent a uniform gives dignity to the profession but this one (vest) is superfluous to say the least because if you really recognize the dignity of the teachers, you should give more importance on increasing their salaries rather than give them an apron-like uniform,” he added.
