‘Katipunan ng mga Bagani’ set on Sunday

Laraw Kali Pamuok will gather masters of the Filipino martial arts (FMA) in the “Katipunan ng mga Bagani” (Gathering of the Warriors) on Sunday at the Palanyag Gym in San Dionisio, Parañaque City.

The event is set at 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a minimal fee to be paid by those who want to watch the FMA demonstrations.

“They (masters) will be there to introduce and demonstrate their tribe’s styles so that Filipinos would be informed and updated about our fighting culture and arts,” said Lakan Ronnie Royce Base of Laraw Kali Pamuok.

More than 15 styles of arnis, kali and escrima will be presented in the fourth gathering of FMA masters.

Among the styles that will be featured are Laraw Sungkiti, Kalis Ilustrisimo, Balintawak Escrima, Modern Arnis, panuntukan (Filipino boxing) and dumog/pamuok (grappling).

According to Base, the local martial arts system has a unique teaching method compared to foreign forms of fighting. In FMA, weapons are introduced in the early stage before advancing to empty hand training.

“FMA is considered as a complete system of combat. From stand-up fighting to ground and into weapons, FMA has it all,” said Base of our combat culture, which he described as “dynamic, technical and practical form of fighting as well as self-defense.”

With the event, Base hopes to raise awareness among Filipinos about their own martial arts style.

“This is our identity as Filipinos. We should be known excellent with this,” said Base. “It has a huge significance on what we are today as a great nation.”
