Hearings by the House justice committee on an impeachment complaint against the seven Supreme Court (SC) justices who voted to oust then-Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno will start on September 4, panel chairman and Rep. Salvador Leachon of Oriental Mindoro said on Sunday.

The complaint was filed by opposition lawmakers Edcel Lagman of Albay, Teddy Baguilat of Ifugao, Gary Alejano of Magdalo party-list, and Tomasito Villarin of Akbayan party-list on grounds that Sereno’s unprecedented removal in May this year was unconstitutional, since the law provides that impeachable officials such as the Chief Justice can only be removed via impeachment.
