Kris to Duterte: Thank you, Mr. President

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte’s remark that the “popularity” of former president Corazon “Cory” Aquino could be attributed to the death of her husband, former Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., only affirmed that the Marcoses had a hand in the late senator’s assassination, Kris Aquino said on Sunday.

The younger Aquino reacted to Duterte’s speech where he said the former president was only popular “for losing the husband in the hands of Mr. Marcos.”

In messages posted in her social media accounts on Saturday, Kris said, “I still admire your authenticity President Duterte, but please allow a daughter to speak through this post? Thank you for acknowledging our family’s loss, and who was behind it. Salamat (Thank you), Mr. President.”

Former senator Aquino was assassinated in 1983 while returning to the Philippines after being exiled to the United States. The late president Ferdinand Marcos was tagged as the primary suspect behind his death.

Vice President Maria Leonor Robredo echoed the same sentiments about Duterte’s remarks.

“First time yata na may pangulo na sinabi ‘yun nang harapan na sa kamay ng mga Marcos namatay ‘yung asawa ni Cory Aquino (This is the first time that a president directly attributed the death of Cory’s husband to the Marcoses),” Robredo said in her weekly radio show.

Robredo is the chairman of the Liberal Party allied to the Aquinos. Duterte is a known ally of the Marcoses.
