Zalameda named SC associate justice

President Rodrigo Duterte has named Court of Appeals Justice Rodil Zalameda as associate justice of the Supreme Court (SC).

Zalameda will fill the post left vacant by Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo, who retired last week.

Zalameda was a former chief prosecutor of Mandaluyong City. He is the first city prosecutor appointed to the high court.

He joined the government after passing the bar examinations in 1987.

At the appellate court, Zalameda is one of the four record holders in the “zero backlog” project of the court.

When members of the Supreme Court voted on nominees for del Castillo’s replacement, Zalameda got the highest vote with 13. He eventually became a favorite of the members of the Judicial and Bar Council.
