3 rebels, 1 soldier dead in Negros encounter

BACOLOD CITY: Three rebels and a soldier were killed in a clash that erupted in Negros Occidental Thursday afternoon, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The soldiers from the 62th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army were conducting combat operations when they chanced upon some 20 heavily-armed men, believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA). This erupted into an armed confrontation that lasted for 30 minutes. Pvt. First Class Joel Fariñas succumbed to gunshot wounds in the chest and leg, while Sgt. Froilan Tosalem and Cpl. Oliver Porten were wounded in the skirmish in Barangay Buenavista in Himamaylan City. Meanwhile, three NPA rebels were dead and an undetermined number were wounded. EUGENE Y. ADIONG
