Abu Sayyaf members attack in Sulu, 3 dead

A soldier, a member of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (Cafgu) and a three-year-old girl died when members of the Abu Sayyaf Group attacked in Talipao, Sulu on Monday, while Muslims were celebrating Eid’l Adha, the military said.

Maj. Arvin Encinas, spokesman of the Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom), said the attack occurred at 8:45 a.m. in Barangay Kagay.

The soldier and the Cafgu member were on board a motorcycle were fired upon by Abu Sayyaf members. They died on the spot.

Two children were also hit but the younger one did not make it.

The military condemned the attack and launched pursuit operations against the attackers.

“This blatant disregard for the spirit of Islamic festivities is a clear disrespect of the Islam teachings. We appeal to the entire Tausug community not to succumb to the ASG’s desperate move of sowing fear among our people,” said Maj. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, commander of Joint Task Force Sulu.
