Diliman College rules Malaysia cagefest


Powerhouse Diliman College-Gerry’s Grill completed a three-game sweep to claim its third-straight title in the 2019 Universiti Institut Teknologi MARA (UiTM) International Sports Fiesta held in Shah Alam in Selangor, Malaysia.

The Blue Dragons started their title-retention bid on a high note by blasting Nepal via a 129-43 demolition with Abdoulaye Niang leading the squad with double-double showing of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Diliman College, owned by former Senator and Diliman Preparatory School President Nikki Coseteng, continued its impressive showing as it routed Usakti-Malaysia, 96-60, behind the leadership of Jhyster Caasalan who scored 24 points, seven boards and four steals.

The Blue Dragons wrapped up their campaign with another solid finish, this time against Indonesia, 90-63, with Niang topping the score board anew with 16 markers, 10 rebounds and five blocks.

Former PBA player Rensy Bajar handled the squad along with assistant coaches Amor Bandayrel and John Leland Mendoza.

“We would like to thank Sen. Nikki Coseteng and Gerry’s Grill for supporting our program. We have a lot of talent, we have good students and the school offers good programs. We want to show that Diliman College could excel in sports,” said Bajar, who also serves as the school’s athletic director.

Also in the team were Joseph Navalon, Kevin Gandjeto, Johnnel Bauzon, Robbi Darang, Ismael Pacheco, Jethro Sombrero, Carl Saavedra, Carmel Espinosa, Emmanuel Alarcon, Jam Mikko Tay and Lubert Nepomuceno.
