Incorporating the vocabulary of his iconic “Celebration” sculptures, Balloon Monkey, Balloon Rabbit and Balloon Swan marked a spectacular new chapter in Jeff Koons’s oeuvre.
Whether it is the seductive reflective surface, the intricate knots, creases, or twists, no detail of the work was compromised in rendering these balloon animals in porcelain.
Koons, intrigued by Limoges porcelain, partnered with French porcelain company Bernardaud to realize this complex work. For over 150 years, Bernardaud has worked with the most skilled artisans at their workshop in Limoges and most recently created new technologies to achieve the porcelain Balloon Swan (Magenta), Balloon Monkey (Orange) and Balloon Rabbit (Violet) by Koons.
Born in 1955 in York, Pennsylvania, Koons is among the few who successfully extract the essentials from avant-gardism, most notably Pop Art.
In his hands, even the most familiar, everyday items transcend commonality to become true icons that manifest the essence of American popular culture.
It came then as no surprise that even Manila society got excited with the arrival of Koons’ creations in the country. The launch of limited edition collection was truly a success.
