Saints down Stallions to earn playoff spot

Joshua Fontanilla took charge in the closing quarters as BRT Sumisip Basilan-St. Clare College snared a playoff spot after repulsing McDavid-De La Salle Araneta, 112-100, in the 2019 Philippine Basketball Association Developmental League (PBA D-League) Foundation Cup on Monday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

Flashy guard Fontanilla poured 16 of his team-high 24 points in the second half when the Saints erected a huge lead and foiled the Stallions’ late rally to secure a seat in the next round with a perfect record in four games.

Basilan-St. Clare remained on top of the seven-squad Group B, but veteran coach Stevenson Tiu was disappointed with his wards’ complacency that allowed McDavid-La Salle Araneta to stage a fightback.

“They take our defense for granted. There were moments that it was good but there were also times that they were neglectful,” said Tiu, whose team’s 24 point-lead got trimmed down to just 10 markers late in the game.

“Maybe they thought that the game would be easy. So, I told them to treat every team as a challenge,” he added.

Irven Palencia tallied 14 points on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting clip while Malian big man Mohamed Pare pumped in a double-double of 13 markers and 17 rebounds for the Saints.

Junjie Hallare and Clarence Tiquia added 12 points apiece in the win.

Basilan-St. Clare broke away from a close 26-24 game as Harold Ng hit a layup to cap a 28-13 run for a 54-37 lead late in the second frame.

Fontanilla then waxed hot in the closing half, sparking the Saints’ assault that resulted in a massive 104-80 advantage with 4:17 remaining in the game.

McDavid-La Salle Araneta cut the gap down to 100-110 behind Henry Iloka but time was not on their side as St. Clare ran away with the victory.

Nigerian center Iloka’s 32 points and 28 rebounds went for naught as the Stallions crashed out of playoff contention with a winless slate in four outings.

Eduardo Doroteo had 22 points, Jobert Medina had 15 markers and Jonas Briones had 12 in the defeat.
