Gilas Pilipinas flies to Foshan, China today to compete in the 2019 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup that will run from August 31 to September 15.
National coach Yeng Guiao said they would immediately buckle down to work upon arrival. The Philippines will face Italy on Saturday, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist Serbia on Monday and Angola on Wednesday.
“We were okay today, we want to be a little bit more relaxed and a little bit more fun as I’ve said. Once we get to China, we will start doing really serious work again. I think we are ready,” Guiao told reporters on Wednesday after the team’s last practice at the Meralco gym.
Guiao added that their minor problem right now is the team’s short period of acclimatization.
“It’s quite short. Other teams were already in China since last week. But we only have two days. I don’t think there’s a question about the time zone,” said Guiao, but stressed that the team is 91 percent ready before leaving for China.
“We will be practicing twice on Friday at the game venue.”
Gilas Pilipinas is composed of young guns Robert Bolick, CJ Perez, Kiefer Ravena, Roger Pogoy and Troy Rosario plus veterans Gabe Norwood, June Mar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, Raymund Almazan, Mark Barroca, Paul Lee and naturalized player Andray Blatche.
