From a targeted viewership on GMA News TV, the network’s Public Affairs group proudly announced on Thursday that its award-winning docu-drama series “Wagas” is crossing over to its main channel to reach a wider audience to move and inspire.
First aired in 2013, Wagas became a weekly routine on GMA News TV with its month-long true-to-life stories of travails and triumphs. Within a year, it won a Gold Camera Award in the Docudrama category at the 2014 US International Film and Video Festival for the love story of a man with cerebral palsy. The show also received a Finalist Certificate from the same award-giving body in 2016 for the “Gabriela and Diego Silang Story.”
In 2018, Wagas was recognized as the “Best Drama Series/Program” by the Catholic Mass Media Awards and as the “Most Development-Oriented Drama Program” by the Gandingan 2019: The 13th UPLB Isko’t Iska’s Multi-media Awards of University of the Philippines Los Baños. Its latest recognition this year is the “Best Drama Anthology” award at the 2019 Gawad Tanglaw (Gawad Tagapagpuring mga Akademisyan ng Aninong Gumagalaw).
Proving its relevance and relatability to a wider audience, the much-loved, award-winning romance anthology therefore premieres anew today, September 2, as a daily program on GMA Network before TV’s longest-running noontime show “Eat Bulaga.”
And for its first month-long offering in its new home, noted dramatic actress Sunshine Dizon was picked to headline the cast of “Throwback Pag-ibig” with leading man Mike Tan.
Directed by Adolf Alix, Jr., Throwback Pag-ibig is the story of couple July and Ryan whose relationship fall apart because of the tragic death of their daughter Smile (Leanne Bautista).
Separated from her husband, July tries to cope with her loss by striving to become a strong, independent woman. She eventually manages her own dress shop but still feels like a failure despite her business’ success every time she remembers what happened to her daughter.
On the other hand, Ryan thrives as an accomplished engineer but like July still bears the pain of losing Smile. Having blamed July for their daughter’s loss, he tries to start his live over with a new girlfriend.
But just as they strive to move on, July and Ryan find out their daughter is actually alive though suffering from illness. And as the little girl returns to her parents’ embrace, she tries her best to mend their broken hearts despite her condition, hoping they will remember the love they each had for one another as a family.
At the media conference, Dizon said of returning to Wagas, “Happy ako kasi malapit sa puso ko ang mga taga-GMA Public Affairs. I always enjoy working with them.”
Tan on the other hand revealed excitement in relating the role as he acknowledged, “Tatay na rin ako eh so I can really feel the father’s emotions in the story. Mabigat ‘yung mangyayari sa kanya and nung kinukuwento pa lang sa amin sa story conference yung buhay ni Ryan, nakaka-relate na ako sa pagmamahal niya para sa anak niya.”
Wagas airs Mondays to Fridays beginning today on GMA Network.
