NPA rebel turns in M-16 rifle in Mindoro

CAMP CAPINPIN, Tanay, Rizal: An active female fighter from the New Peoples Army’s Platoon GMT
(Glenn Marie Tamboong) surrendered an M-16 rifle to members of the Army’s 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division at Barangay Batongbuhay, Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro on Monday. According to Lt. Col Mario Lito Retirva, commanding officer of the 76th Infantry Battalion, “the female fighter, known in the underground movement as alias Laura, operates in the northern areas of Mindoro Island as lead extortionist.” He said Laura revealed that “the NPA [is] making false promises to cover the rampant corruption within the organization,” which was among the major reasons why she turned her back from the group’s armed struggle.

Col Antonio Lastimado, commander of the 203rd Infantry Brigade that has operational jurisdiction over Mindoro Island, encouraged the few remaining NPA rebels in Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Palawan) Region “to lay down their arms, return to mainstream society and enjoy the benefits and grants provided under the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program.”
