College student jumps to death from Olongapo school building

OLONGAPO CITY: A 19-year-old student of Gordon College here died early Monday morning after allegedly jumping from the third floor of the school building.

She was identified as Robin Fernandez, a college freshman taking AB Communication from Purok 6 San Jose Street in Bangal, Dinalupihan, Bataan.

Fernandez was last seen sitting on the railing of the third floor before she fell to her death.

In a radio interview, Major Norman San Esteban, Police Station 3 officer-in-charge, said the CCTVs around the area showed no foul play but that an investigation was ongoing regarding her death.

Allan Mallari, a member of the Civil Security and Safety Unit (CSSU) of the city government assigned at the school, said he was on duty that morning and allegedly saw the victim jump to her death from the railing she was sitting on at the third floor.

She was pronounced dead by the City Health physician.

The school issued a statement within hours saying “It is a sad day that one of our students committed suicide this morning.”

It said the school administration, faculty and students were all heartbroken by the incident and that their initial investigation based on a group chat with friends revealed the student had problems and planned to commit suicide. It said, however, it could not go into details as these were private. PATRICK ROXAS
