SAN CARLOS CITY, Pangasinan: Former Pangasinan Fifth District representative Amado Espino Jr. was critically wounded, while five of his bodyguards, including his driver, were killed in an ambush here on Wednesday, a police official said.
Col. Redrico Maranan, PNP provincial director, said the incident happened along the provincial road of Barangay Magtaking.
Espino was brought to the Blessed Hospital in San Carlos City, and was declared in stable condition by his physician at 6:35 p.m., after blood donors went to the hospital for transfusion.
Maranan, who immediately arrived at the crime scene, said Espino’s convoy and his bodyguards were riding in two vehicles, when three Toyota Innova minivans with armed men flagged them down along the road and opened fire.
Espino sustained gunshot wounds in his breast, legs and abdomen and was rushed at the hospital by his driver.
The driver, who also sustained injuries, was dead on arrival at the hospital.
All four bodyguards in his van were killed.
Espino served as the governor of Pangasinan from 2007 to 2016, and lost his second term as representative of the Fifth district in the last 2019 elections to former Binalonan Mayor Ramon Guico 3rd.
Witnesses said the gunmen, all wearing bonnets and long firearms, fled to Urbiztondo town.
Espino was on his way home after meeting with his son, Second district Rep. Jumel Espino, from Manila. WITH A REPORT FROM DARWIN PESCO IN MANILA
