CEBU CITY: Two of the seven suspects in the killing of former Bohol mayor Gisela Boniel, the wife of Bohol Provincial Board Member Niño Rey Boniel, in June 2017 were arrested by police in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu on Thursday.
Two of the suspects, who were included in the top 10 most wanted persons of the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7), were identified as Lobo Boniel, the top 4 most wanted in Central Visayas and Allan Delos Reyes, the top 5 most wanted in Central Visayas.
Bohol Provincial Police Director Col. Jonathan Cabal said the arrest of the two suspects stemmed from an alias warrant of arrest issued by Judge Christine Muga-Abad of the Regional Trial Court Branch 70 in Lapu-Lapu City on Aug. 23, 2019.
“They (suspects) conspired,” Cabal told reporters in a press conference on Thursday.
Cabal said they received a tip on Thursday morning that the two suspects were hiding in Lapu-Lapu City.
Delos Reyes was arrested in Barangay Basak at past 9 a.m., while Lobo was arrested in Barangay Babag, in a house owned by Patrolman Nico Ababon.
Seized from Lobo were a caliber .45 pistol, a magazine, six live bullets, a cellphone and a police shirt.
He said they would investigate further if Ababon could be liable for harboring criminals. “As far as I can recall, he can be liable for obstruction of justice,” he said.
The two suspects declined to issue any statement to the media.
Cabal said when he interviewed the suspects, their lawyer Inocencio de La Cerna allegedly instigated them to go into hiding.
“He (Lobo) is the brains of the whole murder, while Delos Reyes is the “right hand” of Bohol Board Member Niño Rey Boniel. They have direct participation [in the killing],” added Cabal.
According to Cabal, they would consult with the lawyers about Dela Cerna’s possible charges.
