Negros town councilor slay suspect found guilty

BACOLOD CITY: Regional Trial Court Branch 42 Judge Fernando Elumba on Wednesday found Ryan Gatoc guilty beyond reasonable doubt in the killing of former Ilog town Councilor Antonio Gequillana which took place sometime in June 2011. Elumba sentenced Galoc, a former employee of Ilog municipal hall, to 20 to 40 years in prison. On June 27, 2011, Gequillana was exiting the East View Hotel in Bacolod City when he was shot by Gatoc.

The town lawmaker was on his mobile phone, while boarding his pick-up truck when Gatoc shot him with a .45 caliber pistol. Gequillana died from five gunshot wounds, and did no make it alive to the nearby hospital. Witnesses identified Gatoc as the lone gunman who fled using a motorcycle. A week after the incident, Gatoc surrendered. At the court on Wednesday, he still refused to comment on who were behind the murder and what was the reason he killed the town councilor. Gatoc, is the former bodyguard of former Ilog town mayor Paul Alvarez. The court did not find evidence linking the former mayor to the murder.
