FEU downs UST

FAR EASTERN University (FEU) banked on a strong finish as it downed University of Sto. Tomas (UST), 72-58, to get back to the winners’ circle in Season 82 University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Tamaraws zoomed to a 19-7 closing run en route to bouncing back from a stinging 79-85 overtime loss to National University last Wednesday.

FEU and UST are now tied at No. 4 with similar 5-5 records.

Sophomore guard L-Jay Gonzales paced the Tamaraws with 17 points, six rebounds and an assist while rookie Royce Alforque finished with 16 markers, six dimes and four boards.

Alec Stockton added 10 points and Brandrey Bienes chipped in nine markers, including big baskets in the endgame, for FEU.

Brent Paraiso had 12 points even as Rhenz Abando and Zach Huang had 11 points apiece for the Growling Tigers.

MVP frontrunner Soulemane Chabi Yo had 15 rebounds but was held just seven points in the loss.

With this game’s result, unbeaten leader Ateneo De Manila University clinched a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four.
