Mindanao press group hits slay try

COTABATO: The Mindanao Independent Press Council (MIPC) has condemned an attempt on the life of Pat Lucero Pacquiao, the current information officer of the province of Davao del Norte.

Editha Caduaya, MIPC president, on Sunday said in a statement, “We reiterate that harming any member of the press for any adverse commentary is a dastardly act not [worthy] of a civilized society.”

Should any member of the media profession go out of bounds in his or her commentary, Daduaya added, legal remedies remain the best option to exact accountability.

Pacquiao is also a commentator and station manager of the RP-FM Ang Radyo ng Masa, which he also owns.

According to media reports, Lucero was driving home on Friday morning when an assailant shot him, with a bullet landing on his right shoulder.

He was treated at a hospital.

In interviews that he gave to the media, Lucero recalled that he had commented on hot-button issues in his radio program before the incident.

The MIPC statement said, “We cannot, therefore, rule out the possibility that the attack may have been related to his radio commentary.”

“We also would like to remind our colleagues in the media that freedom of expression has its limits, and there is no substitute for fair, objective commentary,” it added.

“We demand that the police leave no stone unturned in their investigation of this incident,” the statement said.

The MIPC appealed to authorities to provide Lucero adequate security.
