Russian-made PUJs plying Cebu routes

SOME 20 public utility jeepneys (PUJs) from Russia are now plying the Cebu Airport-City Hall route at P11 minimum fare for the first 4 kilometers, according to a private firm responsible for bringing these 22-seater public utility vehicles (PUVs). Gazelle Motors Corp. top honcho Fernando Martinez said 200 units and the first route would ply the busy streets from Marikina City to Pasig City, San Juan City then back to the Eastern Metro. More routes will open pending approval of licenses. Martinez, also chairman of Eastern Petroleum Group, said its flagship brand, Gazelle Citiline, conforms to class 2 of PUV Modernization and its twin model Gazelle van with 2.8 liter euro 4 diesel engines have gained popularity among driver organizations and transport cooperatives across the country. Martinez added his company is aware of the thrust of the government to replace dilapidated and pollution-causing Euro 2-powered jeepneys. He said drivers would be group to cooperatives and they would be undergoing training to run as such. The Russian-made jeepney costs P2.5 million, meaning one needs to set aside at least P30,000 month to pay it in seven years. For the first 100,000 units, which will require not less than P200 billion, Martinez said the government and private financing institutions could pool its resources together with a five to seven-year loan program thereby enabling the transport organizations participating in the program enough time to pay.
