Belmonte named special envoy

President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed former House speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr. as his special envoy to Japan.

Belmonte, a former stalwart of the opposition Liberal Party, will serve as the President’s special envoy for trade and market access, according to the new list of presidential appointees from Malacañang.

Belmonte’s appointment paper was signed by Duterte on October 15.

A former representative of Quezon City, Belmonte served as a lawmaker at the House of Representatives from 1992 to 2001.

He also served as mayor of Quezon City.

Belmonte served as House speaker during the presidency of Benigno Aquino 3rd.
