Arroyo seeks court nod for trip abroad

FORMER first gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo is asking the Sandiganbayan’s Seventh Division to let him travel to Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong.

Arroyo asked for the court’s permission through a motion dated October 14, which was submitted for resolution on Friday.

Based on the motion, the trip to Singapore is for a medical checkup.

His defense counsel said in the motion that he had been permitted to travel many times and had always returned. He has no reason not to return and is, therefore, not a flight risk.

“Accused-movant further manifests that he is ready and willing to submit to any such conditions as this Honorable Court may impose as additional guarantees for his return and submission of himself to its jurisdiction,” it added in part.

The court is enforcing a hold departure order in connection with the graft case filed in 2012 against former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Jesus Verzosa and other individuals, including Arroyo.

The case is in connection with the PNP’s procurement of two supposedly second-hand helicopters that were allegedly passed off as brand new.
