The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) today said the demand for skilled overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the global economy surged in 2005, notwithstanding the effects of the new Japanese visa regulations on overseas Filipino entertainers.

Labor and Employment Secretary Patricia A. Sto. Tomas said that globally, the total number of overseas employment contracts processed for the OFWs reached 981,337 from January 1 to December 31, 2005, or 39,615 higher than the 941,722 contracts processed in the same period in 2004.
