Tigers tame Bulldogs in Antipolo

Antipolo: University of Santo Tomas (UST) thumped National University (NU), 88-76, in Season 82 University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament at the Ynares Sports Center here.

Rhenz Abando, who was the center of attention of local collegiate hoops fans recently after he was rumored to be leaving UST, delivered for the Growling Tigers who improved their win-loss record to 7-5.

Chabi Chabiyo, CJ Cansino, Renzo Subido and Mark Nonoy delivered stellar performances in the last three quarters.

“We played well, we were able to execute our game plan and lots of players stepped up. They just played basketball and had fun. They enjoy the game but they know they are doing that with responsibility,” said UST coach Aldin Ayo.

Down, 17-18, after the first quarter, UST initiated a 21-12 run in the second period en route to a 38-30 halftime lead.

The Growling Tigers erected their biggest lead, 58-35, after Chabiyo’s three-point play with 4:32 left in the third period. They were never threatened from that point onward.

Chabiyo finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds while Cansino had 15 points and five rebounds. Subido notched nine of his 14 points in the last quarter. Nonoy contributed 12 points and Abando nine also for UST.

“I just trust the system. I just followed what coach Aldin’s advice and instruction. I just give my best to the team,” said Cansino.

Dave Ildefonso finished with 27 points and Shaun Ildefonso had 15 points for the Bulldogs, who were already eliminated in the race for a Final Four slot.

NU suffered nine losses in 11 games.
