SEN. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go has joined the whole nation in prayer and in mourning the passing of former Senate president Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of former Senate president Aquilino Pimentel Jr. early this morning (Saturday, October 19). I offer my deepest and sincerest condolences to the bereaved family, particularly to his son and my colleague in the Senate, Sen. (Aquilino ”Koko” Pimentl 3rd),” Go said in a statement.
“Tatay (Father) Nene, as he is fondly called, was a fellow Mindanaoan and a staunch ally in fighting for advocacy he shared with Tatay Digong even before President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration until now,” he added.
“As one of the pillars of PDP-Laban, we are eternally grateful for his wisdom and support for this administration, especially during the 2016 and 2019 elections,” Go said.
Duterte won the 2016 elections for President.
In 2019 elections, 9 out of 12 winners of the Senate race were allied with Duterte.
Go said Pimentel was a visionary, democracy leader and a hardworking legislator.
Acknowledged as the father of local autonomy, Pimentel championed the cause of local governance and had enormously contributed to shaping what local government units possess now.
The Local Government Code of 1991 is a testament to his remarkable contributions, Go said.
He added that “Pimentel’s demise may leave Filipinos with a sad void and was a profound loss to his family and to the country he cared so much about. But his legacy shall forever be remembered and shall always guide us in shaping the destiny of our people.”
“I, together with a grateful nation, pray that he may rest in eternal peace,” Go said.
