185 Bilibid shanties demolished

DOZENS of illegal structures inside the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) have been demolished in two weeks of operations, Metro Manila police chief Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas said on Thursday

New Bilibid Prison (NBP)

He said 185 structures were destroyed, P233,207 cash was recovered, and deadly weapons and other banned items were seized.

“Natutuwa ‘yung mahihirap na inmates kasi sabi at least pantay-pantay na sila sa loob [ng Bilibid] (The poor inmates are happy because now all inmates are treated the same),” Sinas said.

Sinas, meanwhile, said the National Capital Region Police Office pulled out only 500 of the 1,000 police officers deployed in the Bilibid after the demolition.
Sinas is considering sending 1,740 personnel to guard the NBP.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) earlier deployed 300 Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and police officers to the NBP.

“We will continue to extend the much-needed help within our capabilities to ensure maximum security, while investigations in the bureau are ongoing and the regular corrections officers are on floating status,” DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said.
