ANTIPOLO: Ateneo De Manila University is now one win away from sweeping the elimination round of Season 82 University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament after an 88-51 rout of National University (NU) on Saturday at the Ynares Sports Center here.
The reigning champion Blue Eagles erected a hefty 37-point lead against the already-eliminated Bulldogs en route to their 13th consecutive victory.
“It was satisfying. Two weeks in a row, two games in a row. We have come out with a great attitude,” Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin told reporters after the game.
“Sure we put points on the board, made some shots but I think what we really focused on was our defense and rebounding. We have seen our team transfer the work ethic from practice to the court into the game and that’s gratifying as a coach,” Baldwin added.
Angelo Kouame finished with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field plus 13 rebounds. Thirdy Ravena notched 15 points and Tyler Tio nine points for the Blue Eagles.
After Ateneo established a 44-27 lead at the half, the Blue Eagles were never threatened from thereon.
Shaun Ildefonso led the Bulldogs with 21 points and four rebounds, as NU suffered its 11th loss in 13 games.
A victory by Ateneo against University of the Philippines at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Wednesday will automatically send them to the finals and will result in a stepladder playoffs. JOSEF T. RAMOS
