More than just being a prime actress, host and trusted endorser, Marian Rivera first and foremost considers herself a homemaker who is very hands-on with her family’s needs, especially when it comes to nutrition.

It’s common knowledge that Rivera enjoys her time in the kitchen making her an ideal endorser for Mega Prime, a local brand of easy-open canned vegetables such as whole mushrooms, pieces and stems mushrooms, whole kernel corn, cream-style corn, green peas, garbanzos, and canned fruits and sweet preserves, among many others.

During her renewal of contract, Rivera imparted tips on how to handle certain concerns for the family.

On picky eaters
With her eldest child Zia turning four years old in a month, the issue of picky eating hits close to home. But instead of depriving her daughter, Rivera actually gives Zia anything that peaks her curiosity.

“Kasi naniniwala ako na the more mo siyang pagbawalan, the more that she’ll get curious dun sa mga pagkaing pinababawal mo.

“For example, gusto niya ng food na alam naman nating hindi healthy for her, hinahayaan ko siya, okay tikman mo. Then I ask her, ‘Gusto mo ba?’”

Rivera said usually Zia herself would say, “No Mama, I don’t like it.”

“Sinanay ko kasi yung anak ko at yung isang anak ko pa [younger child, Ziggy] na mag vegetable na lang. Yun ang advice ko, the more kasi na pigilan mo they’ll get curious so ibigay mo, sila naman ang makaka realize na mas okay pala ang veggies.”

At the same time, Rivera said it is important for parents to explain to their children why certain foods are not good for them.

“Kasi mga bata yan, the more you verbalize it to them, mas maiintidihan nila. So I tell Zia, ‘Oh anak, alam mo ba ano ang nagagawa ng gulay sa iyo, ito ang nagagawa niyan. Bakit kailangan mong kainin? Pag ito ang kinain mo, anong mangyayari sa iyo?”

The proud mother added she allows her eldest to “cheat days.”

Unlike most moms, Rivera actually gives Zia a little bit of what she’s craving for and explains why it’s not good for her.

“Kung ang mga matatanda nga may cheat days, bata pa kaya. Pero siguro babalansehin dahil naniniwala ako lahat ng sobra masama.”

On planning meals herself
Most hands-on mom would advise for homemakers to see to their family’s weekly meal plan to ensure healthy eating habits at home.

But Rivera, like other working moms, acknowledge that time may not be always on her side.

“Kung organized ako before, all the more ngayon, kailangan naka schedule sila. And I ask Zia what she likes to eat on certain days.”

She balances this by also asking husband, actor-host Dingdong Dantes, for any food cravings he might have.

“Ayaw ko ihalintulad yung sarili ko, minsan kasi nagwo-work sa akin pero hindi nag wowork sa iba. Siguro sa akin lang, ayon sa aking experience, kahit kailan hindi ako mawawalan ng time, kahit gaano ako ka busy, hindi ako nawawalan ng time para silbihan ang asawa ko sa gusto niyang pagkain.

“Alam ko magiging busy ako sa dalawang anak ko pero pag ang asawa ko ang nag request hindi pwedeng hindi ko gagawin sa kanya,” she added.

The actress acknowledges it is an extra effort to balance everything but it can be achieved.

“Lahat ng ito may connection tungkol sa pagkain kaya malaking bagay na ang ihahain ko sa pamilya ko alam kong masustansya. Hindi ko ilalagay ang pamilya ko sa alanganin basta tungkol sa pagkain,” Rivera finally ended.
