Ateneo routs UST, takes Game 1 of UAAP finals

UNDEFEATED Ateneo De Manila University was simply too much for University of Santo Tomas (UST) as it routed the Growling Tigers, 91-77, in Game 1 of the best-of-three Finals of Season 82 University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The triumvirate of Thirdy Ravena, Angelo Kouame and guard SJ Belangel did most of the damage for the Blue Eagles as they now move to a win away from a “three-peat.”

The Blue Eagles were in total control as they posted their biggest lead in the third frame at 66-43 and kept UST at bay the rest of the way.

Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin, however, downplayed the lopsided victory and said the series was not over.

Ravena tallied 32 points and five rebounds; Kouame, 18 points and 12 rebounds; and Belangel chipped in 12 on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Gian Mamuyac also had nine points for Ateneo.
