Must-see shows for the remainder of 2019

MARK BONIFACIO

2019 has truly been an exciting year in terms of shows and concerts both for international and local artists.

Filipino musicophiles were indeed blessed to be given lots of choices. Despite the numerous concerts of foreign artists this year, the audience never forgot to still support local artists, which is good for OPM.

Before the year ends, three must-see shows and concerts are definitely worth every penny earned for a night of musical relaxation.

‘Sikati2! Katrina Velarde Live in Concert.’ November 29, New Frontier Theater.

The famous Suklay Diva has been packing halls with adoring fans ecstatic over her powerhouse vocals. This time around she is bringing her much-talked-about show to a bigger venue to give her followers a chance to be together during their Kat Suklay moment.

Katrina Velarde

Prepare for Kat’s impersonations of other famous singers, and her showstopping version of hits like “Never Enough.” Also watch her perform her own big sellers like “Tama Na” and “Magkaibang Mundo.”

Produced by Viva Live, “SiKati2!” is directed by Miggy Tanchanco with Mon Faustino as musical director. Tickets available at TicketNet online.

‘Ely Buendia A Night At The Theater.’ December 8, Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World Manila.

Before a new decade begins, iconic singer-songwriter Ely Buendia will once again reveal another side to his vast creative arsenal previously unwitnessed by fans. This time around, the Pinoy rock icon tries his hand at something new in his latest concert, “A Night At The Theater” on December 8, 8 p.m. at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila (RWM).

Known as the frontman for numerous influential alternative bands in the country including the four-piece that made its mark as the Philippines’ own Beatles in the ‘90s, Ely’s upcoming performance is borne out of the recent success of RWM’s hit musical “Ang Huling El Bimbo” this year.

For the concert, Ely will be joined by some of the musical’s cast members in celebration of friendship and camaraderie that continue to endure through the songs — Gian Magdangal, OJ Mariano, Jon Santos, Carla Guevara-Laforteza, Reb Atadero, Boo Gabunada, Topper Fabregas and Tanya Manalang.

In this one-of-a-kind show, fans will be treated to a night that recaptures a generation’s favorites, bringing the songs to the stage just as how they are remembered and then some.

While the show’s concept and other highlights remain hush-hush at the moment, fans can expect Ely to bring in his A-game as the cast of “Ang Huling El Bimbo” reprise their characters from the musical for one more night of theater magic.

The show also features writer Dingdong Novenario with the direction of Jamie Wilson.

Tickets available at the RWM Box Office at the ground floor of Newport Mall and all TicketWorld outlets.

‘Boyz II Men Live In Manila 2019.’ December 12, Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World Manila.

Four-time Grammy Award-winning group Boyz II Men is heading back to Asia and performing in Manila, returning from a US tour and residency in Las Vegas at The Mirage Hotel And Casino in Las Vegas.

The group, consisting of founding members Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman and Wanya Morris, will bring a lively show, including fan-favorite songs like, “I’ll Make Love To You,” “Motownphilly,” “End Of The Road” and more, along with new show elements on stage.

The trio holds the distinction of being the most commercially successful R&B group of all time with three No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, selling over 64 million albums worldwide. They had engraved three of the longest-running No. 1 pop singles in history — “End Of The Road” — spending 13 full weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100, which historically concluded the decades-old record held by Elvis Presley, subsequently followed by “I’ll Make Love To You” with a 14-week reign. The third No. 1 is “One Sweet Day” with Mariah Carey which ruled the Billboard chart for a total of 16 weeks, an all-time record they had held until August of this year.

Just in September, Boyz II Men commemorated the 25th year anniversary of the record that cemented their status as music royalty, the 12x platinum, triple Grammy Award-winning album “II.”

“Boyz II Men Live In Manila 2019” is presented by Ovation Productions on its 40th year promoting the biggest names in live entertainment, in cooperation with TAP Edge: The Home of Live Action Sports.

Tickets are available via www.ovation.ph, www.ticketworld.com.ph and all TicketWorld outlets.
