PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has appointed two justices of the Court of Appeals (CA) to the Supreme Court (SC).
Justices Mario Lopez and Edgardo de los Santos replaced Associate Justice Francis Jardeleza and Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, who retired on September 26 and October 26, respectively.
Both Lopez and de los Santos thanked the Chief Executive for his trust and confidence and assured the public that they will perform their constitutionally mandated duty.
Lopez is a graduate of San Beda College. He took his Master of Laws degree at the University of Santo Tomas.
He started his career as a prosecutor of the Tanodbayan, which later on became the Office of the Ombudsman. He was a judge in Batangas before he became a justice of the Appeals court.
Meanwhile, de los Santos, who hails from the Visayas, was the executive justice of the CA Cebu Station before his Supreme Court appointment.
He started his career in the high court before he became a municipal trial court judge in Dumaguete.
With their appointment, only one vacancy remains in the high court in view of the promotion of Diosdado Peralta as chief justice.
