Sibol, the Philippine national esports team, will start their campaign in the 30th Southeast Asian Games today at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
With six golds are at stake in six gaming categories, the 27-strong PH esports squad will test their mettle against competitors from seven other countries in Dota 2, Starcraft 2, Hearthstone, Tekken 7, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Arena of Valor.
Esports is making its debut in the biennial, regional meet.
Sibol will slug it out with Indonesia, Laos and Myanmar in Group B while Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam will see action in Group A.
Group stages in Mobile Legends, Starcraft 2, and Hearthstone kick off today while the playoffs in the three games will happen on Friday, December 6.
Dota 2 and Arena of Valor hostilities will fire off on December 7 followed by their playoff rounds and the Mobile Legends finals on December 8.
Medal games in Hearthstone, Arena of Valor and Dota 2 will be held on December 9 while Starcraft 2 will have its finals in the closing day on December 10, the same day as Tekken 7’s.
On top of the cash incentives from the government, Filipino gold medalists in esports will each receive an additional bonus of P1 million and P2 million for the team categories through the generosity of Smart Communications.
Singapore-based global gaming manufacturer Razer will provide the software, hardware and services in the inaugural esports competition in the biennial meet.
