POPULARITY, or being supported by a majority, is an enduring contemporary argument used to justify the rightness of an action. Democracy has been reduced to a game of numbers, instead of being weighed by reason. Aristotle already saw the danger of this when the polis was bound to be ruled by the unqualified many, or rather, when an irrational multitude trump reason with their whims and caprices.
