TALAKAG, Bukidnon: Two village officials were gunned down on Monday by a lone unidentified suspect in Barangay Dominorog in Bukidnon, police said.
The victims were identified as Lawrence Pidayanon and Mauricio Guinto, both senior citizens and members of the barangay (village) council of Dominorog.
Capt. Dominador Orate Jr., chief of the Talakag Police Station, said witnesses told police that the gunman shot the village officials who were on their way to attend the weekly session on Monday morning.
He added that the suspect reportedly pretended to get a cedula (community tax certificate) and asked for the whereabouts of the barangay chairman.
Orate said the barangay treasurer, Angeli Vercide, told the suspect that the chairman was attending a seminar and was not in his office.
“Vercide saw a gun tacked at the suspect’s waist, making her suspicious,” he added.
The police official said the gunman went out of the barangay hall and hung outside, as if waiting for someone, until the two village council officials arrived.
According to Orate, there was no phone signal in Dominorog, which is 54 kilometers from the Takalag police station.
“Operatives used hand-held radios whenever a patrol is conducted in Dominorog,” he said.
A manhunt has been launched for the suspect, who boarded a tricycle as he escaped to the mountains of Pangantucan, Bukidnon.
The police are looking at “politics” as possible motive for the shooting.
