THE shortfall in agriculture-related infrastructure in the Philippines stands at about P535 billion, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said last week, pointing out the obvious that the backlog is a major obstacle to improving farmers’ productivity and incomes. However, further clarification revealed that the DA only has an educated guess as to what the real need is, as a comprehensive study is not expected to be completed for a couple of months.

Agriculture Undersecretary for Regulations Zanzamin L. Ampatuan provided the P535-billion estimate based on the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) logistics services road map, which does not specifically address agricultural needs, but includes them among the components of the entire logistics sector.
