Close to 39,000 individuals were prevented from leaving the Philippines last year as the Bureau of Immigration stepped up its efforts to curb human trafficking.
In a statement released over the weekend, Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said the departure of 38,522 persons was deferred last year, 16 percent more than the nearly 33,000 in 2018.
