Philosophers, Theologians and now neuroscientists and clinicians think a lot about love. We use this word for so many emotions but ancient Greeks had seven words for love that corresponded to different types of love. Here are the seven kinds according to the ancient Greeks.
Eros or erotic, passionate love
Eros was the Greek god of love and sexual desire. He was the one who shoots golden arrows into the hearts of both mortals and immortals without warning. According to the Greeks, it was dangerous to have this kind of love because it is mainly based on sexual attraction. It is where erotica came from.
Philia or brotherly love
Philia represents the sincere and platonic love. It can be love between lovers when they’ve been together for a long time. It could be sisterly love and the accepting love of good friendship. According to experts it’s the love that is good for the health. The touch of a loved one. The philia love lowers blood pressure and makes us more resilient when hard time comes.
Ludus or playful love
Ludus is the flirtatious and teasing kind of love, the love accompanied by dancing or laughter. It’s the fun kind of love. This generation loves Ludus kind of love.
Pragma or longstanding love
Pragma is the everlasting love between a married couple which develops over a long period of time. Pragma is the highest form of love between lovers with commitment that comes from understanding, compromise and tolerance.
Agape or love of mankind
Agape love is modeled on the love of the Christian God for men and love of man for God. It is selfless love, the love for humanity. It is unconditional. The love you give without expecting anything in return. It is compassionate love that can be reflected in all charitable acts.
Philautia of love of self
The ancient Greeks believe there are two kinds of philautia love. They believe that the first one is important in any relationship because we can only love others if we truly love ourselves and we can only care for others if we truly care for ourselves. We can’t give what we don’t have. The other kind of philautia love is pure selfish and seeks pleasure, fame, and wealth often leading to narcissism.
Storge or love of parents to children
This kind of love is what mothers and fathers are giving to their children. It is the most natural kind of love — forgiving, accepting and willing to sacrifice. It is natural and present without corrosion even the person is worthy or not worthy of that love.It is the kind of love that makes us secure, comfortable and safe.
