Jaime J. Yambao

I RECENTLY attended another book launch of the group that meets every other Wednesday for lunch and conversation at the Café Havana and now calls itself the Carmen Guerrero Nakpil Group (CGNG) after its late founder. The group otherwise calls itself the Daytime Shift of Café Havana because at nighttime, the crowd is different and there’s a Latin band and it’s more friendly and fun. For the gathering of the group, the deceased owner Larry Cruz, seemingly from the grave, would have the center tables joined and covered with a tablecloth and small vases of flowers in deference to the style and request of bosom and family friend Mrs. Nakpil. (Unbeknownst to many, Mrs. Nakpil was a favorite lecturer of the Department of Foreign Affairs on such matters as etiquette and table manners, as well as consultant on good and proper Spanish.) The lunch is “KKB,” but there’s a glass of red wine for the members and their guests, on the house courtesy of Mr. Cruz.
