THE coronavirus disease 2019 and the African swine fever, two issues involving biosecurity, are dominating the current national conversation, along with a critical issue of national security, the Visiting Forces Agreement with the United States. The dominance is such that very few Filipinos realized that on January 31, Britain, the great power of the past, already started the 11-month transition period for its exit from the European Union. This will be the messiest political and economic divorce of our generation and its impact on the world will be more profound than two or three coronavirus outbreaks.
