The highly-anticipated Season 82 University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) volleyball competition will finally open on March 3, two weeks after the postponement of its supposed opening day due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Perennial contender Far Eastern University (FEU) and University of the East (UE) will begin the hostilities, with the Tamaraw Spikers facing the Red Warriors in the men’s division at 2 p.m. and the Lady Tamaraws clashing with the Lady Warriors at 3:30 p.m. in the women’s side at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The FEU men’s team finished runner-up to National University while the women’s squad made it to the Final Four last season.
Defending women’s champion Ateneo De Manila University will start its campaign against University of the Philippines on March 4 at the same venue.
Other game days will also be held at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City which served as the venue of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games volleyball tournaments.
For the first time in recent years, the league will hold one game each in the men’s and women’s divisions every Tuesday.
Four games will be played every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, with an alternating schedule featuring the men’s at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and the women’s at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
The change in schedule was implemented after the bronze medal finish of the Philippine men’s volleyball team in the 30th SEA Games.
“With the success of the men’s volleyball team in the last SEA Games, it is about time that we put men’s volleyball side by side with the women’s,” said UAAP president Emmanuel Fernandez.
