Once again, PeopleAsia magazine soared to greater heights as it celebrated its 20th anniversary with a star-studded People of the Year Awards Night and Musicale at Okada Manila’s Grand Ballroom. Two extravaganzas rolled into one, the show will be aired on Cignal TV at a later date.

Sara Soliven-De Guzman, Joanne Ramirez, Senator Sonny Angara, Kathryn
Bernardo, Michael Cinco and Isko Moreno Domagoso

“The evening will be about celebrating 20 years of PeopleAsia, a magazine read by 20 million people during the past decade; a magazine that’s all about people,” said Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez, the magazine’s president, publisher and CEO.

Henry Chusuey, Andrew Tan, Alice Eduardo and Myrna Yao

“Born in the new millennium, PeopleAsia now roars and soars into its twenties. There were and will continue to be challenges, but it’s a time of plenty at 20,” added Joanne Rae Ramirez, the magazine’s editor-in-chief.

Sheila Romero, Babe Romualdez, Sonny Belmonte, Jessie Sincioco, Lea Salonga and Berna Romulo-Puyat

Among the People of the Year were Alliance Global Group Chairman Dr. Andrew Tan, dubbed “Woman of Steel” and Sta. Elena Construction and Development Corp. The night’s top award, The Max V. Soliven Lifetime Achievement Award, named after PeopleAsia’s founding publisher, was given to the late Betty Go-Belmonte. Betty was honored for her works as a journalist, as a pillar of the free press and for her advocacy programs that continue to help multitudes to this day. Receiving the award on her behalf was her husband, former Speaker of the House Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr., daughter Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, son Miguel Belmonte and daughter-in-law Millette.

Ofelia Wadle, Dr. Elsie Pascua and Merci Padolina

Receiving the People’s Choice Award was no less than the hardworking Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso, who shot into national prominence for his swift cleanup and restoration of Divisoria, Quiapo, Escolta and other places in the country’s capital. He received the award from Romualdez. The mayor also received the Volvo Ironmark Award from the luxury car brand’s President and CEO Atty. Albert Arcilla and marketing head Chris Yu.

Other People of the Year awardees included Senator Sonny Angara, Department of Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat, international musical icon Lea Salonga, world-renowned fashion designer Michael Cinco, Okada Manila’s president and Co-Vice Chairman Takashi Oya, Chef Jessie Sincioco, doctor to the stars Dr. Vicki Belo and President and CEO of Richprime Global president Myrna Yao. National Artist for Visual Arts Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera also received a Special Award for Arts and Culture.

The show featured performances by Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano, who brought the house down and who also received his second People of the Year award. Meanwhile, 2013 awardee Kuh Ledesma also led a special in memoriam number to honor mentors, former colleagues and awardees, who have since passed on.

Also gracing the stage were musical sensations Jon Joven and Yanah Laurel, who performed with the Marcy David Orchestra, while celebrity host Bianca Valerio led the evening’s ceremonies. Directed by Miguel Miñana of ThemeWorks Events and styled by Dave Sandoval, the event was a great success. Congratulations to the ever gorgeous editor-in-chief Joanne Rae Ramirez and her team. Until next year, a big applause!
