The city of Navotas has reported its first positive case of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) — one of the persons under investigation (PUIs) who died on March 24.
With this development, all 16 cities and one municipality in Metro Manila now has Covid-19 positive cases.
Navotas Mayor Tobias “Toby” Tiangco said the city’s lone fatality died shortly after being admitted at the Navotas City Hospital (NCH).
Tiangco warned that Covid-19 cases would increase if Navotas residents will continue to defy the order to stay home and refuse to follow quarantine protocols.
“Our first Covid-19 casualty lived in a densely populated area. It is also where our Task Force ‘NavoDAMPOT’ apprehends most of the violators of home quarantine. Unless we follow the quarantine rules, we can expect more cases of Covid-19 in our city,” the mayor said.
“Italy recorded 919 deaths in one day. Let us not wait for this to happen in Navotas. We do not have the facilities nor the workforce to contain such widespread contagion of the disease,” he added.
As of March 28, Navotas had 125 persons under monitoring and 21 PUIs under quarantine or admitted at NCH. Of the four other PUI deaths, one came out negative and three are awaiting test results from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine. Arlie O. Calalo
