“THIS is the hand we’ve been dealt!” is a line from “The Walking Dead” uttered by Rick Grimes, the main character in earlier episodes of the series. And maybe that’s how we ought to look at the situation. We are frustrated over the way things are and how the situation is being handled by government — from barangay (village) to national level — but when we look around, we see the same elsewhere. We worry a great deal about what the future has in store as uncertainty is the only given now. This isn’t a prolonged vacation or an aftermath of a natural disaster. We are now in unknown territory — with the rest of the world. This is the hand we’ve been dealt and we have to make the best of it.

Thankfully, we have scientists and doctors who are trying to make sense of at least the medical aspect of the coronavirus pandemic. The data gathered from the time when cases started being reported in China and later elsewhere in the world hold the key to eventually beating the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 or SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the coronavirus disease 2019 or Covid-19. The more data we have, the more we can learn about the virus and how to defeat it.
