WASHINGTON, D.C.: United States President Donald Trump has pivoted to a dark new tone on the coronavirus pandemic after a warning on staggering potential casualties rendered his previous election campaign optimism untenable.

At a more than two-hour White House press conference stretching into Tuesday evening (early Wednesday in Manila), Trump expressed shock at the latest government projections, in which 100,000 to 240,000 people could die and vastly more without rigorously applied social distancing.
