A PANDEMIC, according to a recent opinion, “shakes loose the old order.” A new one rises out of the ruins and ashes, and at the epicenter of the change will be the society’s new definition of leaders and leadership. The post-pandemic stage, this is a certainty, will return to the political fringe the quacks, hacks and demagogues — and the snake oil salesman approach to decision and policymaking.

Mass enlightenment (the proles and the peons will be vested with civic virtue by the pandemic), will hopefully lead to the election and appointment to office of leaders highly steeped in curiosity, science, technical knowhow, data and managing crises. Competence and knowhow will be the primary requirement of leadership in a post-coronavirus Philippines. The cynical leaders will be swept away by the newfound political awakening.
